Governor’s Harbour is the hub of Eleuthera, an unspoiled beach-lover’s paradise with 100 miles of pristine pink sand beaches. Folks who travel here marvel at the tranquility and seclusion. No amusement parks, no gambling, and no shopping malls, but still, there’s plenty of excitement, charm, and authentic Bahamian hospitality. Be prepared to go home relaxed, rejuvenated and ready to come back again and again.

Governor’s Harbour is a terrific town to explore. Wander the historic waterfront, gaze at the colonial homes and discover the island’s growing Eco-tourism attractions. The sunsets over the harbour are legendary. And getting out of town is easy; there’s little to no traffic, so golf carts and bikes get you out to the nearby beaches, and it’s likely you can find your own, since there are so many gorgeous pink sand hideaways to choose from.

  • Dunmore’s rents golf carts for easy access to beaches or simply walk around the pretty harbour town
  • Visit Da Perk for coffee or Governor’s Harbour Bakery; you’ll feel like a local in minutes.

Eleuthera beaches are ideal for those who prefer a remote, unspoiled experience. You won’t find shops, food stands or other conveniences, so stock up in town and pack your own picnic goodies before arriving! Coral reefs surround Eleuthera; it’s a great place for dives. Eleuthera is most famous for bonefishing and deep-sea fishing, but reef and spear fishing are very good, too. Sailors and boaters will enjoy Eleuthera’s 100-plus miles of coastline. There are magnificent views every nautical mile, from soaring cliffs to secluded coves.

  • Try Paul Petty Fishing or Harbor Water Adventures to be outfitted for exciting on or under water fun.
  • Twin Cove and French Leave beaches are two standouts for sunbathing and swimming. Oceanview Farm offers horseback riding on nearby beaches.

Both Governor’s Harbour and the Eleuthera island area have shops with arts, crafts and other gifts. Or how about creating your own souvenir, inspired by all that stunning island beauty? Donna Allen, a Martha’s Vineyard artist, teaches painting classes every Monday morning at Governor's Harbour’s charming 19th-century pink Haynes Library.

  • Try Dornell’s Treasures for driftwood art, or Island Made, Walter’s and Normas’ for other authentic local crafts.
  • The Market in Rock Sound has all the picnic items you’ll need.

Fresh-caught seafood takes the central place at the table in Governor’s Harbour, but there are plenty of options to please most palates. Mainly low-key, cafe’s and restaurants want to make you feel like you’re a local, so relax and go with the flow. Don’t miss the Governor’s Harbour Friday Fish Fry! This sociable waterfront street party is the happening place to be each Friday night – mingle with local residents and visitors from all over the world.

  • Tippy’s and The Beach House offer food AND live music with dancing.
  • 3 J’s Jerk Pit and Pammy’s offer authentic local foods.
