Tallahassee, the capital of Florida, is a high-energy blend of politics and business, as well as one of Florida’s big college towns: home to Florida A&M University and Florida State. In 1929, the City of Tallahassee opened its first municipal airport, Dale Mabry Field. On December 3, 1989, the city opened the existing $33 million, airline passenger terminal. Whether you’re in town to work, visit your favorite student, or explore the city’s history, outdoor beauty, dining and nightlife, you’ll find Tallahassee a warm, inviting place to spend time.

Tallahassee is only one of four U.S. state capitals to offer a panoramic view of the city – 22 floors up at the Capitol Complex’s observatory and art gallery. House and Senate viewing galleries are a hotbed of political action March through May. Schedule a 30 minute tour of the Governor’s mansion, styled after Andrew Jackson’s home, The Hermitage. Visit one of the most significant Native American ceremonial sites in Florida: Letchworth-Love Mounds Archaeological State Park.

The Nature Conservancy considers Tallahassee as “America’s Last Great Places.” See why at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, as you bike, stroll and picnic the day away amidst beautiful birds, including bald eagles, whooping cranes and rare migratory species. Other scenic spots: lush gardens at Dorothy B Oven park and Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park, featuring an entertaining boat tour along the Wakulla River.

Downtown Tallahassee features upscale goods and a fun marketplace atmosphere each Saturday, with entertainment, arts and crafts, music, literary café and farmers market. Another spot for fun fashion, art, dining and nightlife is Gaines St./All Saints District. If traditional mall are more your style, you have two: Tallahassee Mall and the Governor’s Square Mall.

Fine dining in a warm, elegant atmosphere can be found at Cypress Restaurant, which promises sophisticated Southern regional-style fare, including fresh in-house preparations of chef-cut aged meats, local produce and fresh seafood. The popular Kool Beanz Café guarantees an offbeat, yet top-quality gourmet dining alternative that’s “fun, funky and delicious”.
