Émile Durkheim (born , Épinal, France—died , Paris) was a French social scientist who developed a vigorous methodology combining empirical research with sociological theory. He is widely regarded as the founder of the French school of sociology.
Durkheim argued for the “dualism of human nature.” He thought that only a sociological theory could account for the dualism frequently noted but left unexplained by philosophers from Plato to Kant.
